1836 — (16 Cheshvan 5597) The Russian Cabinet of Ministers adopted a regulation closing all Jewish printing presses «to facilitate surveillance,» except for two: those in Kiev and Vilna
1840 — (30rd of Tishrei, 5601) Sultan Abdulmecid issued his famous ferman concerning the «Blood Libel Accusation» saying: «… and for the love we bear to our subjects, we cannot permit the Jewish nation, whose innocence for the crime alleged against them is evident, to be worried and tormented as a consequence of accusations which have not the least foundation in truth…»
1898 — (11 Cheshvan 5659) Herzl in the settlement of Ness Ziona. His diary: «…we were met by children who sang songs, an old man gave me bread and salt and wine, the fruits of the land; I had time to visit almost all the peasants’ houses.»
1933 — (7 Cheshvan 5694) After a large shipment of weapons destined for the Haganah was discovered in the port of Jaffa, the Arabs of Palestine declared a general strike. A demonstration in Jaffa, led by the president of the executive body, Musa al-Husseini, escalated into riots, during which several thousand people attacked a small police detachment, which responded with batons and gunfire. 26 demonstrators and one policeman were killed. This was followed by six more weeks of rioting in all major cities, during which 24 civilians were killed. The riots were suppressed by police, not by the army. They differed from earlier riots in that the targets were institutions of the British government, not Jews.
1934 — (18nd of Cheshvan, 5695) A pact to insure peace in the Zionist ranks by putting an end to riotous clashes among Jewish groups in Palestine or in any other country was signed today by David Ben-Gurion, on behalf of the World Zionist Executive, of which he is a member, and Vladimir Jabotinsky, as head of the Zionist Revisionist World Union.
1936 — (11 Cheshvan 5697) The Beilinson Hospital opened in Tel Aviv, named after Moshe Beilinson (see October 5 1889)
1937 — (22nd of Cheshvan, 5698) The Palestine Post reported that in Danzig Jewish shops and houses were pillaged and windows smashed
1938 — (2 Cheshvan 5699) Zaki al-Harif, the mayor of Tiberias (who had held the post since 1923), was killed by Arabs. He was the only Jew among the mayors of cities with mixed populations and enjoyed the support of both Jews and Arabs
1938 — (2nd of Cheshvan, 5699) Нolocaust. ….. The Germans began arresting Jews with Polish citizenship who had been living in Germany and began deporting them to Poland. The Polish authorities placed the Jews in the border town of Zbaszyn and forbade them from leaving in the hope that the large number of Jews near the border would pressure the Germans into beginning negotiations to allow them back into Germany. The negotiations ended in January 1939- some Jews had already been taken in by friends and family in Poland, while other deportees were permitted to return to Germany to wind up their affairs, and then return to Poland
1941 — (6 Cheshvan 5702) The Shoah. Himmler issued an order prohibiting Jews from leaving territories under German control
1941 — (6nd of Cheshvan, 5702) Нolocaust. Jews of Sluzk, 60 miles south of Minsk, Belorussia, are annihilated by Einsatzkommando troops, half of whom are German, half Lithuanian
1941 — (6nd of Cheshvan, 5702) Нolocaust. In the Polish town of Kalisz a large black truck drove up and took on a passenger load of Jews. Escorted by two Gestapo cars, the truck drove away. Its passengers were never heard from again. This was the first of the gas-wagons
1947 — (13nd of Cheshvan, 5708) At Petah Tikva a house belonging to a member of Haganah was blown up, reportedly by members of the Irgun. Haganah leaders said they will not back down despite warnings by Irgun of a looming civil war between the two Jewish organizations
1948 — (24rd of Tishrei, 5709) War for independence. During Operation Yoav, Israeli forces capture the Egyptian held fort at Bet Guvrin. The Egyptians had taken the fort when the invaded Israel in May of 1948; Israel recaptured Nizzanim in the Negev
1955 — (11rd of Cheshvan, 5716) A paratroop regiment which is on a mission to capture the Kuntila Fortress in Sinai, deep in Egyptian territory…kills ten Egyptian soldiers and captures twenty nine” while suffering casualties that included two dead and two wounded
1966 — (13 Cheshvan 5727) Terrorist attack. One Israeli was wounded by an explosion on the railway line to Jerusalem.
1967 — (23 Tishrei 5728) On the holiday of Simchat Torah, several thousand people were present at the Choral Synagogue in Moscow. Shouts of «Long live Israel!» could be heard.
2003 — (1 Cheshvan 5764) Starting at 3:30 PM local time, militants fired several mortar shells and anti-tank missiles in the area of Mount Dov and the village of Rajar near the Lebanese border. As a result, one Israeli soldier was lightly wounded. The military returned fire at Hezbollah positions.
2006 — (5 Cheshvan 5767) A synagogue in Vladivostok was desecrated. Unknown individuals wrote abusive words directed at Jews on its door and walls, drew swastikas, a crossed-out Star of David, and wrote: «Jews, get out to Israel.»
2018 — (18 Cheshvan 5779) Terrorist attack in the United States. Neo-Nazi Robert Bowers opened fire on worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. 11 people were killed.
2019 — (28 Tishrei 5780) In Samaria, the first medical school in the West Bank opened at Ariel University.
2022 — (2 Cheshvan 5783) Israel and Lebanon signed a maritime boundary agreement. As a result, Lebanon received the entirety of 850 sq. km of the disputed territory of the exclusive economic zone.
2023 — (12 Cheshvan 5784) The Gaza War. Day twenty-first. 20-year-old Sergeant Shoham Moshe Ben-Harush died in hospital from wounds sustained in battle with Arabs. Infantry, engineering, and armored IDF units, supported by attack helicopters, entered the central and eastern parts of the Gaza Strip. Dozens of Hamas military targets were attacked. Upon completing their mission, the units withdrew from the Strip. 10 trucks carrying humanitarian aid — including water, food, and medicine — passed from Egypt into the Strip. Since the beginning of the war, a total of 84 humanitarian aid trucks had entered the enclave.
2024 — (25 Tishrei 5785) Terrorist attack. Near Herzliya, a heavy truck driven by a 40-year-old Israeli Arab plowed into a group of people waiting at a bus stop. One person was killed, 37 were injured

1786 — Frédéric Cerfberr was born — a French statesman. Under Napoleon, he served as secretary to the imperial commissioner on the Ionian Islands. He later served as consul in New York (1822), New Orleans, and Haiti. He was killed during an earthquake in Haiti in 1842.
1811 — (9 Cheshvan 5572) Isaac Merritt Singer was born — inventor of the sewing machine. Died July 23, 1875.
1839 — (19 Cheshvan 5600) Rabbi Yitzchak Yaakov Reines was born near Pinsk — founder of the Mizrachi movement. Died in 1915.
1891 — (25 Tishrei 5652) Paul Grüninger was born in Switzerland — a Righteous Among the Nations, commander of the police in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland, who saved 3,601 Jews from Germany and Austria from annihilation. Died in 1972.
1896 — L. Slavin was born — writer, playwright. Died September 4, 1984.
1904 — (18 Cheshvan 5665) Margaret Arnstein was born — one of the most prominent public health figures in the United States. Died in 1972

2002 — (3rd of Cheshvan, 5775) 41 year old Tamir Masad, 22 year old Lieutenant Matan Zagron and 32 year old Sgt.Maj. Amihud Hasid — were killed, and 20 bystanders were wounded in a suicide bombing at a gas station near the settlement of Ariel. The two officers and soldier were killed while trying to prevent the terrorist from detonating the bomb
2018 — (18rd of Cheshvan, 5779) In Pittsburgh, PA, eleven Jews, including Joyce Feinberg, Richard Gottfried, Rose Mallinger, Jerry Rabinowitz, Cecil Rosenthal, David Rosenthal, Bernice Simon, Sylvan Simon, Daniel Stein, Melvin Wax and Irving Cooper were gunned down at their synagogue on Shabbat morning by ant-Semite armed with an “AR-15-style assault rifle

2024 — (25 Tishrei 5785) Operation «Northern Arrows.» Reserve Staff Sergeant Shaul Moyal was killed — a 47-year-old resident of the Samarian settlement of Karnei Shomron. A volunteer, long past the age of military obligation. Moyal, a father of ten, worked as a science teacher at a religious science and technology school for boys in Raanana. When the war began, despite his age, he reported for duty with his unit
