135 — (10 Tishrei 3896) According to an aggadic legend, Rabbi Judah ha-Nasi was born on this day — the head of the Sanhedrin, the systematizer of the Oral Law, and the editor of the Mishnah, upon which the Talmud is based and from which the classical Jewish law of Halakha is derived.
1806 — (22 Tishrei 5567) The French writer Chateaubriand visited Jerusalem: «The houses of Jerusalem are gloomy rectangular piles, very low, without chimneys or windows; they look like prisons or tombs.»
1860 — (18 Tishrei 5621) The Committee for the Organization of Jews in Russia resolved to permit «Jewish merchants to establish a prayer house in St. Petersburg… and that this prayer house… shall not be named a synagogue or a prayer school.»

1936 — (18th of Tishrei, 5697) The Battle of Cable Street took place on Sunday in Cable Street in the East End of London. It was a clash between the Metropolitan Police Service, overseeing a legal march by the British Union of Fascists, led by Oswald Mosley, and anti-fascists, including local Jewish, groups. The majority of both marchers and counter-protesters travelled into the area for this purpose
1941 — (13th of Tishrei, 5702) Нolocaust. ….. Fifteen hundred Jews from Kovno, Lithuania, are transported to the Ninth Fort and murdered. In Kovno proper, Nazis lock the Jewish hospital and set it ablaze, incinerating all inside; The Bulgarians enforced an extraordinary measure that prohibited the Jews of Macedonia from engaging in any type of industry or commerce. All existing Jewish businesses had three months to transfer ownership to non-Jews or sell their assets and close down
1941 — (13 Tishrei 5702) Shoah. A unit of Sonderkommando 4a shot 537 Jews in Pereyaslav (Kyiv region). In the village of Lenindorf (Skadovsk district, Kherson region), Sonderkommando 10b shot over 1,000 Jews — residents of seven Jewish kolkhozes. A patrol of Sonderkommando 10a carried out further executions in Henichesk. Sonderkommando 4b carried out its first executions of Jews in Poltava. Marshal Antonescu ordered the deportation of all Jews of Bukovina across the Dniester within 10 days. The deportation of Jews from the Sokiryany camp (Chernivtsi region), which held over 10,000 people, began across the Dniester, as did the deportation of Jews from the Kishinev ghetto to Ukraine. On the same day, 57 Jews were likely shot in Frunzovka (Odessa region)
1941 — (13 Tishrei 5702) Shoah. 341 Jews were shot in Poltava.
1943 — (5 Tishrei 5704) Shoah. The Jews remaining in Antwerp after the first deportation of August 28, 1942, were arrested and sent to Auschwitz. Of the 42,000 Belgian Jews deported by the Nazis, 1,207 returned from the death camps. In Antwerp itself, about 800 people survived, hidden by local Catholics.
1948 — (1st of Tishrei, 5709) Golda Meir ….. was the newly appointed Israeli ambassador to the Soviet Union. Israel had just won its independence in May of 1948 (and the fighting was still going on). The Soviet Union was in the throes of anti-Semitism. Mrs. Meir went to the Grand Synagogue in Moscow. At best, they expected the usual 2,000 Jews to attend Rosh Hashanah services. Instead, she was greeted by a crowd of 50,000 who pressed in upon in Joyous disbelief
1956 — (29 Tishrei 5717) Terrorist attack. Five Israeli workers were killed by Arabs in Sdom.
1959 — (2 Tishrei 5720) Terrorist attack. In the Moscow suburb of Malakhovka, a synagogue and the caretaker’s house at the Jewish cemetery (the only active one in Moscow) were set on fire; the caretaker’s wife, S. Goldovskaya, died in the blaze. The same night, antisemitic leaflets were scattered in Malakhovka
1992 — (7th of Tishrei, 5753) An El Al Boeing 747-200F crashed into 2 apartment buildings in Amsterdam, killing 43 including 38 on the ground
1999 — (24 Tishrei 5760) An Arab-Israeli agreement was signed at Sharm el-Sheikh. The parties agreed to conclude final-status negotiations by spring 2000 and to complete the entire peace process by September 2000
2003 — (8th of Tishrei, 5764) Islamic Jihad claimed credit for todays’ suicide bombing at the Maxim Restaurant in Haifa that killed 21 and injured 51 including a two-month old baby
2006 — (12 Tishrei 5767) An oil deposit of industrial-scale reserves was discovered near the Dead Sea at a depth of 2 km.
2009 — (16 Tishrei 5770) The 15th International Cartoon Exhibition was held in Haifa.
2011 — (6 Tishrei 5772) Eight paratroopers from the 890th Battalion of the IDF Paratroopers Brigade left a fortified position in Hebron without authorization because their platoon commander ordered them, «like new recruits, to carry out grounds-keeping, painting, and similar tasks, including guard duty.» They refused to obey the order and turned to the company commander. The latter did not rescind the platoon commander’s order. After this, the soldiers left the fortified position.
2024 — (2 Tishrei 5785) Operation «Arrows of the North.» As a result of an airstrike on a Hezbollah underground bunker in Dahieh, high-ranking Hezbollah leaders and officials were killed

1956 — (29th of Tishrei, 5717) Gabriel Benjamin Dahan (born 1931), Ephraim Waldman (born 1907), Arie Lahav (born 1921) and Jacob Lustig (born 1916), all of whom worked for Solel Boneh, were murdered today when 10 Palestinian terrorists who infiltrated from Jordan machine gunned their jeeps on the Sodom-Beer Sheva Road also known as Highway 25
2001 — (17th of Tishrei, 5762): Nineteen year old Tali Ben-Armon, 20 year old Sergei Freidin and 76 year old Haim Ben-Ezra were murdered when Fatah terrorist opened fire on civilians at the central bus station in Afula
2010 — (26 Tishrei 5771) In the French town of Saint-Médard, Thérèse Bousse died at the age of 103. In 2006, she was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. During the Nazi occupation, Thérèse and her husband, René, saved a Jewish family of eight. Thérèse and René not only hid these people but also helped smuggle them across the demarcation line. And there were several families saved by Thérèse and her husband.
