1940 (10 Sivan 5700) — In Bordeaux, an operation began that the historian of these events, Yehuda Bauer, called the largest single‑person rescue of Jews during the Holocaust. Portuguese consul Aristides Mendes began issuing visas to everyone, regardless of nationality, race, or religion. Members of Mendes’s family were also involved in the work. Mendes issued visas for over a week in Bordeaux, Hendaye, and Bayonne, until the Germans occupied Bordeaux on June 30. On July 4, the Portuguese authorities opened disciplinary proceedings against Mendes; in the autumn, he was dismissed. In memory of Mendes, a forest in the Negev Desert in Israel was named after him, as well as a square in Tel Aviv. In January 1961, a tree was planted in his honour in the “Righteous Among the Nations” alley at Yad Vashem. In 1966, Yad Vashem issued a medal: “To Aristides de Sousa Mendes — from the grateful Jewish people”

1944 (25 Sivan 5704) — Avigdor Kahalani, a Hero of Israel, was born in Nes Tziona. During the Yom Kippur War, he commanded the 77th Tank Battalion. In a battle near the city of Quneitra, the battalion managed to halt superior enemy forces and destroy dozens of Syrian tanks. Kahalani himself commanded the battalion from the open hatch of one of the tanks
