1506 — (10st of Elul, 5266) The first printed edition of Lashon Limudim, a Hebrew grammar by David ben Yahya was published today in Constantinople
1808 — (8 Elul 5568) A group led by Menachem Mendel of Shklov arrived in Haifa. They lived in Tiberias for about two months, from where they moved permanently to Safed to avoid friction with the Hasidim who had arrived there some thirty years before them. But even in Safed, they could not integrate into the local Ashkenazi community, which was predominantly Hasidic. Therefore, the need arose to create another Ashkenazi community. In the second wave, at the beginning of the summer of 1809, another party of returnees arrived, led by Rabbi Saadiah of Shklov
1914 — (8nd of Elul, 5674) In response to an appeal by the Yishuv’s leaders and his own knowledge of the desperate condition of the thousands of Jews living in Palestine Henry Morgenthau, ….. Sr., the U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire sent a cable to Jacob Schiff that read, in part, “PALESTINIAN JEWS FACING TERRIBLE CRISIS … BELLIGERENT COUNTRIES STOPPING THEIR ASSISTANCE … SERIOUS DESTRUCTION THREATENS THRIVING COLONIES … FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS NEEDED.” Within a month the appeal produced $50, 000 (the equivalent of 1 million dollars in the 21st century)
1929 — (24nd of Аv, 5689) Bedouins attacked nearly a dozen Jewish settlements in the northern Galilee pillaging the houses and burning the crops.” According to at least one report, at least 22 Jews were wounded in the attacks.
1939 — (16 Elul 5699) The Yishuv. The British arrest in Tel Aviv of Etzel commanders who had gathered to discuss a plan to seize power in Eretz Yisrael.
1941 — (8 Tishrei 5701) Shoah. In the Slovechansk and Ovruch districts of the Zhytomyr region, 66 Jews were shot. In the villages of Zhvanchik and Sokolets (Minkovetsky district, Khmelnytsky region) – 380 Jews. In the Volyn region – 88 Jews. Likely on the same day in Korostyshev (Zhytomyr region) – 1,200 Jews.
1942 — (18 Elul 5702) Shoah. From Ternopil, Mykulyntsi, Zbarazh, Skalat, and Strusiv (Ternopil region) to Bełżec, 2,600, 1,200, 560, 400, and 180 Jews were deported respectively, a total of 4,940 people, and at least 100 were killed on the spot. On the same day, from Zolochiv, Olesko, Sasiv, and Pidkamin, approximately 2,400, about 100, and 300 Jews (total 2,800 people) were deported to Bełżec, and several hundred were killed on the spot. In Lviv, a Jew named Feldman stabbed an SS man to death. In retaliation, the Germans killed his family and all Jews surnamed Feldman registered with the Jewish Council
1947 — (15 Elul 5707) The UN commission signed a document containing recommendations for resolving the situation in Mandatory Palestine. Based on these recommendations, the UN issued a decision to establish the State of Israel
1950 — (17st of Elul, 5710) Business leaders, Cabinets members and leading representatives from the Knesset held an all-day session to discuss Israel’s worsening economic conditions. The economic troubles stem mainly from the fact that the expansion of production is unable to keep up with the growth of the population, which increased in 27 months from 655,000 to 1,125,000
1954 — (1st of Elul, 5714) Operation Binyamin 2 led by Ariel Sharon and Meir Har-Zion came to an end with the capture of 3 Jordanian soldiers
1955 — (12st of Elul, 5715) In response to repeated attacks from Fedayeen (the term for terrorists at this time) forces under the command of Mordechai “Motta” Gur and Rafael “Raful” Eitan led an attack which destroyed the military installations at Khan Yunis in what was known as Operation Elkayanm.
1967 — (25 Av 5727) Only 14,000 Arabs returned from Jordan to the West Bank with permission from the Israeli government.
1968 — (7 Elul 5728) In Algeria, the Israeli hostages of an El Al plane hijacked 39 days earlier by PLO terrorists were released.
1990 — (10 Elul 5750) 50,000 Arabs gathered for a rally in Amman, Jordan, demanding a holy war against Israel.
2004 — (14 Elul 5764) Terror attack in Beersheba. Two buses were bombed; 16 people were killed and over 100 were wounded and injured.
2006 — (7 Elul 5766) Rocket barrage on Sderot from Gaza. Five rockets were fired at the city.
2007 — (17 Elul 5767) The 9-week «Caravan of Concerts» festival concluded on the shore of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee). Concerts were organized in Kiryat Shmona, Dimona, Nahariya, Ashdod, Beit Shemesh, Netanya, Akko, and Netivot
2010 — (21st of Elul, 5770) Four Israelis were shot dead in their car today near the West Bank settlement of Kiryat Arba. One of the dead was a woman believed to have been pregnant. The Beit Hagai couple has been identified as Yitzhak and Tali Ames, 45 and 47. They are survived by six children, the oldest 24 and the youngest 5.
2013 — (24st of Elul, 5773) Israeli communications company Spacecom has successfully launched a state of the art satellite to space tonight from the Zenit launching pad in Baikonur, Kazakhstan
2013 — (25 Elul 5773) Workers of the Jewish National Fund began collecting pine cones in northern Israel. Each year, the Fund receives an average of 3 tons of pine seeds, from which seedlings are grown in nurseries. In this way, the Fund has assembled the world’s largest seed bank of pine seeds, from which trees are grown not only in Israel but also in many countries around the world.
2022 — (4 Elul 5782) Highway 16 opened, allowing entry into Jerusalem from the western direction. The length of the road, named after Ariel Sharon, is 4.7 km from the exit from the roundabout before entering Jerusalem to the intersection on Beit Street.
2024 — (27 Av 5784) A double terror attack in Gush Etzion using car bombs. Three IDF officers were wounded, including the commander of the Etzion Brigade

1881 — (6 Elul 5641) Emanuel Goldberg was born – an Israeli physicist and pioneer of computer science. He died on September 13, 1970.
1896 — (22 Elul 5656) Sophia Yudina was born – a US community activist. She moved to Israel in 1949. At the instruction of Ben-Gurion, she headed the state archive. She died on April 24, 1960
1935 — (2nd of Elul, 5695) Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook known as Rav Kook passed away. Rabbi Kook was the first Chief Rabbi Ashkenazic of Palestine, serving from 1921 until his death in 1935
1935 — (2nd of Elul, 5695) Herman Bernstein an American journalist, ….. writer, translator, and diplomat, passed away. Herman Bernstein was born in 1876, at Vladislavov which was on the Russo-German border to David and Marie Bernstein. In 1893, he emigrated to the United States, where he completed his education and married Sophie Friedman on December 31, 1901. “His first stories were published in 1900. He contributed to the New York Evening Post, The Nation, The Independent, and Ainslee’s Magazine. He was the founder and editor of The New London Day and an editor of the Jewish Tribune and of the Jewish Daily Bulletin. As a correspondent of the New York Times, Bernstein regularly travelled to Europe. In 1915, he went to Europe to document the situation of Jews in the war zones. He documented the Russian Revolution in 1917 for the New York Herald, which led him to both Siberia and Japan with the American Expeditionary Forces. He also covered the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 for the same newspaper. In 1921 Bernstein published a book History of a Lie, an account of the notorious forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. According to GPU agent Pavlovsky (Yakshin), arrested in Germany in 1929, Bernstein worked for both GPU and Comintern, arranging pro-Soviet coverage in American press. One of his main goals was to describe White army and White emigres as anti-Semitic instigators of pogroms and suppress coverage of pogroms by units of the Red Army and other forces allied to Bolsheviks during the Russian civil war. GPU supplied Bernstein with forged documents for publication. In 1921 Bernstein received 17 000 gold rubles for his services

2023 — (14 Elul 5783) On Highway 433, an Arab in a truck ran into a group of soldiers. 20-year-old Sergeant Maxim Molchanov was killed in the terror attack.
2024 — (27 Av 5784) During a counter-terrorism operation in northern Samaria, 20-year-old Sergeant Elkan Navon was killed. Three other soldiers were wounded in the same battle.
