1743 — (16 Elul 5503) On this day, Suleiman Pasha withdrew his troops from the besieged Tiberias after 83 days of siege, having besieged the city for almost three months. Three days later, he died. Since then, on the 4th to 7th of Elul, the Jews of Tiberias celebrate a local Purim.
1908 — (28 Av 5668) The general assembly of the members of the Istanbul Jewish Gymnastics Club decided to rename it «Maccabi.»
1919 — (29 Av 5679) Civil war. Pogroms in the towns of Zhivotovo, Tetiev, and Pogrebishche.
1920 — (11 Elul 5680) The «Workers’ Defense Battalion named after Trumpeldor» was founded in the camp near the Tiberias highway — one of the main organizational cells of the future Haganah.
1925 — (5 Elul 5685) «At the request of the working Jewish population» of Kiev, the Brodsky Choral Synagogue was transformed into a workers’ club
1928 — (8th of Elul, 5688) As of today, the Jewish population in the U.S.S.R. numbers 2,600,945.
1929 — (19 Av 5689) Arab riots in Tel Aviv, Haifa, and a pogrom in Gaza
1933 — (3 Elul 5693) A so-called «Transfer Agreement» was concluded between the Zionist Federation of Germany, the Anglo-Palestine Bank representing the Jewish Agency, and Nazi Germany: Jewish money was used in Germany to purchase export goods, which were delivered to Palestine, sold there, and part of the money was received by immigrants arriving in the country.
1938 — (28 Av 5698) The kibbutz Ein HaMifratz was established by the method of «Fence and Tower.»
1941 — (2 Tishrei 5701) Shoah. 380 Jews were shot in Kalush (Ivano-Frankivsk region), about 90 in Chortkiv (Ternopil region), 69 Jews in the Volyn region, 82 Jews in the area of Zvyagel — Korostyshiv, 20 Jews in the village of Kalynik (Vinnytsia region), 549 Jews in Dzerzhynsk (Zhytomyr region), and 546 Jews in Berdychiv
1941 — (2nd of Elul, 5701) Нolocaust. Fifteen hundred Jews are murdered at Tykocin, Poland; In Yugoslavia, 8000 Jewish residents of Belgrade are transported to Topovske Supe, where they are murdered.
1942 — (12th of Elul, 5702) Нolocaust. ….. Jews are locked in a church at Lask, Poland, and killed. Among the victims are a mother and her baby, who is born inside the church; At Zdunska Wola, Poland, 1100 Jews are herded to the local Jewish cemetery, where all but about 100 are shot and beaten to death. Survivors are forced to bury the victims; At the Treblinka death camp, a deranged, young Jewish woman is discovered hiding a small child beneath the bed sheet she wears. Camp guards shoot and kill both the woman and the child
1942 — (12 Elul 5702) Shoah. In Berezno (Rivne region), 1,800 Jews were shot, and another 200 Jews managed to flee. In Vinnytsia, several hundred Jewish craftsmen were killed, and in Vishnevets — about 300 Jews
1945 — (15th of Elul, 5705) Jewish immigrants were permitted to leave Mauritius for Palestine
1949 — (29th of Av, 5709) Ma’agan Michael ….. was founded today by a group consisting of 154 members and 44 children who had joined together in 1942, most of whom were members of the Hebrew Scouts. It was named Ma’agan (anchorage) due to the intent of its first settlers of using the land to make a living from the sea, and Michael in honor of Michael Polak, who donated money to the Palestine Immigrant Colonization Association (PICA)
1969 — (11th of Elul, 5729) Two Jews were publicly hanged in Iraq after being accused of spying for Israel and the public rejoiced at the execution
2008 — (23th of Av, 5768) Close to 200 terrorists, including two who had murdered Jews, were freed today in another «goodwill gesture» to the PA by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert
2008 — (24 Av 5768) The base in Lod, the main transport hub of the Israeli Air Force, was closed. Aircraft were relocated to a new base in Nevatim.
2014 — (29 Av 5774) The Israeli government decided to annex around 4 square kilometers of land in the Beit Lehem area. This action was a response to the kidnapping and murder by Arabs of three Israelis: 16-year-old Gilad Shaar, 16-year-old Naftali Frenkel, and 19-year-old Eyal Ifrah. The decision came into effect on August 31.
2015 — (10 Elul 5775) Shoah. A street named after Moshe Krautz appeared in Jerusalem.
2020 — (5 Elul 5780) A new archaeological site, a fortress built by the Canaanites about 3,200 years ago, was opened to visitors near the kibbutz Gal-On in the vicinity of Kiryat Gat.
2024 — (21 Av 5784) About 100 aircraft of the Air Force attacked and destroyed thousands of missile launchers of the «Hezbollah» organization in southern Lebanon, ready to fire on northern and central areas of Israel
