1506 — Jews settle in Pinsk and secure lands for synagogue and cemetery
1729 (25 Av 5489) — The Beth Jacob Synagogue of the Sephardic community, founded by the Pereira family in 1707, was opened on one of the central streets of The Hague
1819 — (18th of Av, 5579) With the mobs crying “Hep, hep!” an anti-Semitic riot broke out in Frankfort.
1843 (13 Av 5603) — The foundation stone of a synagogue was laid in Hobart (Tasmania)
1911 (15 Av 5671) — Basel. The Tenth Zionist Congress. A Small Executive Committee of 5 members and a Large Executive Committee of 25 members were elected. Most importantly, the Zionist Organization recognized the priority of practical actions for the development of Palestine.
1938 (12 Av 5698) — Two field companies of the Haganah arrived to protect the settlements of Ramat Ha‑Kovesh (see 4 August 1938) and Tel Mond.
1939 (24 Av 5699) — The Haganah blew up the British Navy patrol ship Sinbad Two, which was patrolling the territorial waters of Eretz Israel to prevent ships carrying illegal immigrants from entering.
1941 (16 Av 5701) — The Shoah. In Tatarbunary (Odesa Oblast), 451 Jews were shot. In the Volodarsk‑Volynsky District (Zhytomyr Oblast), the 10th Infantry Regiment of the SS executed 95 Jews. Killings of Jews began in the village of Borivka (Chernivtsi District, Vinnytsia Oblast). Likely on the same day, Task Force 12 executed 94 Jews in the village of Babchyntsi (Vinnytsia Oblast) “for sabotaging the harvest”.
1942 (26 Av 5702) — An escape of 167 young men and women from the ghetto in the town of Mir, Grodno Oblast. They encountered antisemitism among Soviet partisans, which led to the death of many of the escapees; only a part of them managed to join partisan units. By the time Grodno Oblast was liberated in July 1944, about 40 people from this group remained alive.
1942 (26 Av 5702) — Apparently, about 2 000 Jews were executed in Kolki (Volyn Oblast).
1982 (20 Av 5742) — Terrorist attack. An attack on a Jewish restaurant on Rue de la Rosière in Paris. Five people were killed and 22 wounded.
1990 (18 Av 5750) — Israel. The first successful launch of the Hetz missile, an Israeli‑made system designed to destroy enemy ballistic missiles in the upper atmosphere. Development of the Hetz began in 1987 and was funded by the USA.
2001 — (20th of Av, 5761) A suicide bomber struck a busy intersection in Jerusalem, ….. blowing up a Sbarro Pizza Parlor, killing 15, 7 of whom were children and wounding 130. Hamas and the Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack. The dead included Zvika Golombek, 26, from Karmiel; Shoshana Yehudit (Judy) Greenbaum, 31 (5 months pregnant), from Passaic, New Jersey, U.S.;Tehila Maoz, 18, from Jerusalem; Frieda Mendelsohn, 62, from Jerusalem; Michal Raziel, 16, from Jerusalem; Malka Chana (Malki) Roth, 15, from Jerusalem; Mordechai Schijveschuurder, 43, from Neria; Tzira Schijveschuurder, 41, from Neria; Ra’aya Schijveschuurder, 14, from Neria; Avraham Yitzhak Schijveschuurder, 4, from Neria; Hemda Schijveschuurder, 2, from Neria;] Lily Shimashvili, 33, from Jerusalem; Tamara Shimashvili, 8, from Jerusalem; Yocheved Shoshan, 10, from Jerusalem; and Giora Balash, 60, from Brazil
2009 (19 Av 5769) — A puppet theatre festival opened in Jerusalem. It lasted five days.
2010 (29 Av 5770) — Bus No. 102 began operating between Ariel and Mount Gerizim, where the ancient city of Samaria is located and about five hundred members of the Samaritan community reside.
2014 (13 Av 5774) — Operation Protective Edge. The Israeli Air Force struck more than 60 targets in the Gaza Strip and at individual militant groups. Rocket attacks on Israeli territory continued.
2024 (5 Av 5784) — War in Gaza. Day 308. A large multi‑level tunnel, 3 kilometres long and fully equipped for long‑term habitation, was discovered and destroyed

1654 (6 Elul 5414) — Rabbi Yom‑Tov Lipmann Heller, a rabbi, public figure, commentator on the Mishnah, and writer, died at the age of 75.
1856 — M. Vinvetsky, an American poet and playwright, was born. He died on 18 March 1932
2001 — (20th of Av, 5761) Seventeen year old Aliza Malka was killed by terrorists “in a drive-by shooting.”
